What Does the Thyroid Do?
The thyroid is an unassuming and often overlooked part of our body, yet holds great importance in keeping many of our bodies’ key processes in check – particularly our metabolism. Located at the base of the neck, the 5cm butterfly-shaped gland releases hormones that primarily control the body’s metabolism (how it uses energy). The hormones also regulate a large number of key body functions, such as:
  • Breathing
  • Nervous system
  • Body weight
  • Muscle strength
  • Body temperature
  • Heart rate
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Cholesterol level
The thyroid gland is a part of the endocrine system, which comprise of numerous glands in the body that produce, store and release hormones into the bloodstream, which further distributes these vital hormones to the body’s cells to keep them functioning normally.
Should the thyroid produce excessive hormones, or insufficient hormones, or have abnormal growths (nodules or cancer),
the effects can be immediately obvious. Thankfully, they can be effectively diagnosed and treated.

How are Thyroid Conditions Diagnosed?
Thyroid conditions can sometimes be difficult to diagnose as symptoms tend to be similar to those of other medical conditions. Fortunately, there are definitive tests that can detect if there is an underlying thyroid issue or not.
1. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be diagnosed through a blood test, which detects the level of thyroid hormones present in blood.
2. Thyroid disorders associated with either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism can also be diagnosed through blood tests, and these disorders include:
  • Thyroiditis
  • Graves’ disease
  • Hashimoto’s disease
  • Goitre
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid cancer

Apart form blood tests, imaging tests (typically an ultrasound) may also be conducted to accurately observe the thyroid for any changes in size, shape or abnormal growths.

A physical exam may also be conducted, where your neck area is felt for the presence of obvious growths and swellings.

Where there is a lump in the neck (e.g. a thyroid nodule) that is suspected to be cancerous, a fine-needle biopsy will be taken and sent for a lab examination to determine if it is benign or malignant.
